Rare “Floating” Clematis (PY Cane)
According to Peter Holmes, this type of weight is rare due to the fact that - during the time he was working with Paul Ysart at Caithness in the 1960s - the artist was trying to create a design in which the central motif and the garland “floated” above the colour ground. The problem was to ensure that the canes in the garland remained parallel to the colour ground. Peter reckoned that no more than 30 or 40 were produced which met Paul’s stringent quality criteria. This was one that did !
The flower - a double clematis - has yellow-striped, copper aventurine petals around a millefiori cane centre. The curving stem bears 4 green aventurine leaves (it is, in itself, rare to find petals and leaves made purely from aventurine).
A continuous garland of green/white complex millefiori canes completes the design, which is set over an opaque pale-blue ground with a PY signature cane on the underside. Flat, polished base.
