Reputedly once part of the collection of the ill-fated Empress Carlota of Mexico, this fine paperweight from the Josephinenhütte in Silesia has 7 complex millefiori canes encircling a centre cane on a bed of pure white muslin. Apart from a well-shaped pale-pink & white cabbage rose, the ring contains 2 other types of rose canes - 6 red/yellow roses around a single white/green cog and one small red/yellow rose surrounded by 6 white/green cog canes. It’s rare to find these 3 types of rose-canes in one weight. (See illustrations of the 3 types on pages 73 & 74 of Peter von Brackel’s book “Classic Paperweights from Silesia/ Bohemia”. Most of the other canes can be found on the following pages).
The base has a relatively wide wear rim and a polished central concavity.
