This book by German author Peter von Brackel - currently available only in English - takes an in-depth look at mid-19th Century classic paperweights from Silesia and Bohemia. The author has identified 8 groups of paperweights and - based on particular canes and certain characteristics - has attributed a number of them to specific glassworks, such as Karlsthal and the Josephinenhütte (in Silesia); Harrach and Egermann (in Bohemia). The author also discusses Bussolin paperweights, weights with engraved & etched amber and ruby-stained bases, and post-classic weights from Riedl in Bohemia and from unidentified German makers in Silesia and Thuringia.
340-pages full of illustrations of paperweights and related items and over 2,500 images of individual canes - including date, silhouette and rose canes.
The first 250 copies are signed and numbered.
This book is a must for all collectors of antique weights. There is a review by John Hawley - editor of the PCA Bulletin - in the PCA Quarterly Newsletter #178, October 2010 and by John Simmonds - author of “Paperweights from Great Britain 1930 - 2000" - in the PCC Newsletter No. 104 in November 2010.
