Possibly an early attempt to make a chequer or panelled weight, or perhaps a forerunner of the traditional spoke pattern? The cranberry colouring comes from the translucent coating around the latticinio segments; the ground is, in fact, clear. Half the perimeter consists of horizontal latticinio tubes, the other half is made up of cable twists, similar to the 3 pieces seen in the top view. The motley collection of canes - not set in any recognizable pattern - are 2 or 3-coloured cogs in blue, coral pink, white, lemon, yellow and pale green.
Flat, polished base with a rough pontil mark.
