An extremely rare paperweight - dated 1848 in blue numerals on a white plaque - from the Josephinenhütte in Silesia with 21 closely-spaced millefiori canes on muslin. Currrently, this is only the 3rd one recorded. (One was sold at Sotheby’s in London in 2003 and Sibylle Jargstorf illustrates one in her 1991 book “Paperweights”, Page 67). That weight also included the same double silhouette cane found in this weight. There are 2 other silhouettes: a rather fat white monkey and what could be a dog! Partial canes and cane fragments form a border “garland”. The weight has a low dome, similar to the other recorded weights.
An unusual feature is the 32-point star-cut in the concave base, surrounded by a wide basal rim.
